The research group of Jin Biaobing and Wu Di, professors from Nanjing University, showed the optical generation of ultrafast spin current in an AFM/HM heterostructure at zero external magnetic field and room temperature by detecting the associated terahertz emission. Their results were included in the basic research list and provided a new approach to develop high-speed, stable and highly-integrated AFM spintronic devices.

The research team of Luo Qingming, an academician with the Chinese Academy of Sciences, reported a line-illumination modulation technique for optical tomography with high resolution, high throughput, robust performance, high sensitivity and low background. The team also developed a high-definition fluorescent micro-optical sectioning tomography method that features a signal-to-noise ratio of 110, facilitating the analysis of whole-brain high-resolution datasets. The research of Luo's team was included in the applied research list.

The team of Professor Nie Liming from Xiamen University won the nomination award in 2021 top 10 optical breakthroughs. They pioneered the development of lipid metabolism drugs and developed a new method to monitor the changes of lipid and hemoglobin metabolism in efficacy evaluation. Using photoacoustic molecular imaging, the team captured changes induced by the treatment, which included decreased lipid catabolism, increased oxygen metabolism and angiogenesis. Relevant achievements have been authorized by invention patents.
