Conference to guide diabetes patients in cycling activities held online

Updated: 2022-07-20

A virtual conference on diabetes prevention and control and mass participation in sports activities was held on July 10 with the theme: "Move to Change Diabetes".

The initiative was launched by Huang Dong, a young type-1 diabetes patient from Southwest China's Yunnan province, in 2020, to encourage more people with the condition to take part in sports. As the country's first cycling association composed of diabetics, it is designed to help patients realize that cycling can make a difference. The group invited people with diabetes to attend sports activities, and bring hope as well as positive energy to them and their families.

Under the guidance of the Changing Diabetes Fund affiliated with the China Health and Medical Development Foundation, the Sports Medicine Academic Subgroup of the Biophysical Society of China (BSC) has collaborated with Peking University First Hospital and the Sports Medicine Integration Innovation Center at the Capital University of Physical Education and Sports (CUPES) to monitor health conditions of diabetes patients involved in the "Move to Change Diabetes" initiative. By providing scientific sports guidance, these institutions have raised the patients' health literacy and capability, lowered the incidence of the complications of diabetes, and improved their living standards.

The opening of the online conference marks that findings made by the Innovation China sports and medicine integration sci-tech service group has been put into use.

Chang Yubin, a national cycling coach, talked about training methods and techniques of cycling in terms of the classification of bikes, the scale of training intensity, physical rehabilitation, and the selection and maintenance of training equipment.

He advised exercisers to adopt a gradual and progressive manner in bike training to prevent accidental injuries.

Li Ang, a physician from the Endocrinology Department at Peking University First Hospital, highlighted the importance of cooperation among attendees in the "Move to Change Diabetes" initiative.

Ten participants in the initiative shared their inspirational stories in the fight against diabetes while engaged in cycling.

Since the BSC joined the Innovation China program in 2020, it has proactively responded to China Association for Science and Technology’s call in promoting the transformation of sci-tech findings and serving sci-tech innovation and entrepreneurship.

The society has also mobilized sports and medical workers to develop a new industrial model of sports-medicine integration for mass health, and given full play to the functions of mass participation in sports in the improvement of public health, the prevention and control of chronic diseases and physical rehabilitation.
