BSC expert named 2024 CAS Person of the Year

Xue Tian, an expert from the Biophysical Society of China (BSC), has been honored with the prestigious 2024 “Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) Person of the Year – Innovative Person” title, according to the recently released list by the CAS.

The award aims to promote the scientific spirit and inspire scientists to take the lead in building China into a scientific and technological powerhouse, said the CAS.

Xue is chairman of the BSC’s Organization and Construction Working Committee, executive director of the Division of Life Sciences and Medicine at the University of Science and Technology of China (USTC), and professor and doctoral supervisor at the university’s School of Life Sciences.

He also works as director of the Neural Circuits and Brain Cognition Department of the Hefei National Laboratory for Physical Sciences at the Microscale, a member of the standing committee of the CPC USTC committee and assistant to the president.

His research primarily focuses on the signal transduction mechanisms of photoreception, neural circuits of non-image-forming vision, as well as the application of gene editing, stem cell technology and new nanomaterials in the treatment of retinal photoreceptor cell degenerative diseases in large animal models.

The Person of the Year title, presented by the CAS, recognizes and celebrates outstanding role models who have made significant contributions to scientific and technological innovation and demonstrate exemplary personal conduct.
